April 01 This Year's Pranks: Google and QualcommGmail's Autopilot: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/autopilot/index.html Qualcomm's Convergence: March 31 Although it's not April Fool's yet....Spaghetti really grows on trees! Thousands believed this!
MR NOLAN: One hundred years ago, in 1859, 41 boys sat in this room and were asked the same question that greets you at the start of each semester. Gentlemen, what are the four pillars? BOYS: Tradition, honor, discipline, excellence.
CHARLIE: Rumor has it, you did summer school. NEIL: Yep. Chemistry. My father thought I should get ahead. How was your summer Slick? CHARLIE: Keen. NEIL: Gentlemen, what are the four pillars? BOYS: Travesty. Horror. Decadence. Excrement.
KEATING: "Oh Captain, My Captain" who knows where that comes from?... Not a clue? It's from a poem by Walt Whitman about Mr. Abraham Lincoln. Now in this class you can call me Mr. Keating. Or,if you're slightly more daring, Oh captain, My Captain. Now let me dispel a few rumors so they don't fester into facts. Yes, I too attended Hell-ton and survived. And no, at that time I was not the mental giant you see before you. I was the intellectual equivalent of a ninety-eight pound weakling. I would go to the beach and people would kick copies of Byron in my face. …Because we are food for worms lads. Because, believe it or not, each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold, and die. Now I would like you to step forward over here and peruse some of the faces from the past. You've walked past them many times. I don't think you've really looked at them. They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you. Their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because you see gentlmen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in.
KEATING: Thank you Mr. Dalton. Armies of academics going forward, measuring poetry. No, we will not have that here. No more of Mr. J. Evans Pritchard. Now in my class you will learn to think for yourselves again. You will learn to savor words and language. No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world. I see that look in Mr. Pitt's eye, like nineteenth century literature has nothing to do with going to business school or medical school. Right? Maybe. Mr. Hopkins, you may agree with him, thinking "Yes, we should simply study our Mr. Pritchard and learn our rhyme and meter and go quietly about the business of achieving other ambitions." I have a little secret for ya. Huddle up. Huddle up! We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman: "O me, o life of the questions of these recurring, of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities filled with the foolish. What good amid these, o me, o life? Answer: that you are here. That life exists, and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.
MCALLISTER: Quite an interesting class you gave today, Mr. Keating. KEATING: I'm sorry if I shocked you, Mr. McAllister. MCALLISTER: Oh, there's no need to apologize. It was very fascinating, misguided though it was. KEATING: You think so? MCALLISTER: You take a big risk by encouraging them to be artists John. When they realize they're not Rembrandts, Shakespeares or Mozarts, they'll hate you for it. KEATING: We're not talking artists George, we're talking free thinkers. MCALLISTER: Free thinkers at seventeen? KEATING: Funny, I never pegged you as a cynic. MCALLISTER: Not a cynic, a realist. Show me the heart unfettered by foolish dreams, and I'll show you a happy man. KEATING: But only in their dreams can man be truly free. 'Twas always thus, and always thus will be. MCALLISTER: Tennyson? KEATING: No, Keating.
NEIL: I hereby reconvene the Dead Poets Society. Welton chapter. The meetings will be conducted by myself and the other new initiates now present. Todd Anderson, because he prefers not to read, will keep minutes of the meetings. I'll now read the traditional opening message by society member Henry David Thoreau. "I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life." CHARLIE: I'll second that. NEIL: "To put to rout all that was not life, and not, when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived. NEIL: It was a dark and rainy night, and this old lady, who had a passion for jigsaw puzzles, sat by herself in her house at her table to complete a new jigsaw puzzle. But as she pieced the puzzle together, she realized, to her astonishment, that the image that was formed was her very own room. And the figure in the center of the puzzle, as she completed it, was herself. And with trembling hands, she placed the last four pieces and stared in horror at the face of a demented madman at the window. The last thing that this old lady ever heard was the sound of breaking glass. NEIL: Alfred Lord Tennyson. Come my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset. And though we are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;-- One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
KEATING: Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try! Now, when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks. Consider what you think. Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Don't be resigned to that. Break out! KEATING: Mr. Anderson thinks that everything inside of him is worthless and embarrassing. Isn't that right, Todd? Isn't that your worst fear? Well, I think you're wrong. I think you have something inside of you that is worth a great deal. "I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world." W. W. Uncle Walt again. Now, for those of you who don't know, a yawp is a loud cry or yell. Now, Todd, I would like you to give us a demonstration of a barbaric "yawp." Come on. You can't yawp sitting down. Let's go. Come on. Up. You gotta get in "yawping" stance. TODD: A yawp? KEATING: No, not just a yawp. A barbaric yawp. TODD: Yawp. KEATING: Come on, louder. TODD: Yawp. KEATING: No, that's a mouse. Come on. Louder. TODD: Yawp. KEATING: Oh, good God, boy. Yell like a man! TODD: Yawp! KEATING: There it is. You see, you have a barbarian in you, after all. Now, you don't get away that easy. The picture of Uncle Walt up there. What does he remind you of? Don't think. Answer. Go on. TODD: A m-m-madman. KEATING: What kind of madman? Don't think about it. Just answer again. TODD: A c-crazy madman. KEATING: No, you can do better than that. Free up your mind. Use your imagination. Say the first thing that pops into your head, even if it's total gibberish. Go on, go on. TODD: Uh, uh, a sweaty-toothed madman. KEATING: Good God, boy, there's a poet in you, after all. There, close your eyes. Close your eyes. Close 'em. Now, describe what you see. TODD: Uh, I-I close my eyes. KEATING: Yes? TODD: Uh, and this image floats beside me. KEATING: A sweaty-toothed madman? TODD: A sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain. KEATING: Oh, that's excellent. Now, give him action. Make him do something. TODD: H-His hands reach out and choke me. KEATING: That's it. Wonderful. Wonderful. TODD: And, and all the time he's mumbling. KEATING: What's he mumbling? TODD: M-Mumbling, "Truth. Truth is like, like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold." KEATING: Forget them, forget them. Stay with the blanket. Tell me about that blanket. TODD: Y-Y-Y-You push it, stretch it, it'll never be enough. You kick at it, beat it, it'll never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying to the moment we leave dying, it will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream. KEATING: (whispering to Todd) Don't you forget this.
KEATING: Now, I didn't bring them up here to ridicule them. I brought them up here to illustrate the point of conformity: the difficulty in maintaining your own beliefs in the face of others. Now, those of you -- I see the look in your eyes like, "I would've walked differently." Well, ask yourselves why you were clapping. Now, we all have a great need for acceptance. But you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go, "That's baaaaad." Robert Frost said, "Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." Now, I want you to find your own walk right now. Your own way of striding, pacing. Any direction. Anything you want. Whether it's proud, whether it's silly, anything. Gentlemen, the courtyard is yours.
Be Proud of Yourself.

We won!! We won! We won the district Mock Trial competition!! Unbelievable!
I say it's unbelievable not because I think our team is weak or something but because many evidences toward the end pointed to a direction of losing it. In the last round, our opponent was so weak that we thought we were just competing for the last place since the arrangement of competing teams is based on power match. Besides, the judges in the other two courtrooms took a really long time to comment the teams, which was also disheartening since, usually, the top two team get comprehensive critiques from the judge in order to get better in the state competition.
Anyway, there's another school that's going to state also on the 16th in Portland. To speak the truth, we think there's not a very great possibility for us to win in the state since the members of teams from Portland areas have more advantages than we do: their parents are usually lawyers, or even judges. But, still, i'm sure we'll carry on our hardwork since we've come to so far a point already. May 02 Time Dilation--A thought experimentI was studying for SAT II Physics test when I encountered this interesting yet perplexed topic:
In figure 2-3a is a spaceship travelling past Earth at a high speed. It is drawn to show the point of view of the astronaut. Figure 2-3b shows the point of view of an observer on Earth. The lightbulb flashes a light and the astronaut measure the time it takes the time to travel to the mirror, bounce off the mirror and return to the sensor. He can use the equation time = distance / velocity, since he knows the speed of light which is constant and the distance which is twice the height of the spaceship. For a observer on Earth, time can also be measured. But notice in figure 2-3b that the spaceship is moving to the right according to the observer on Earth. So it looks as the light travels in a diagonal path which is longer than twice the height of the spaceship. Using the same equation (t = d/v), the Earth observer obtained a longer time interval than the astronaut does. In other words, the astronaut measures a shorter time, so the time seems to run more slowly in the spaceship. This result of the special theory of relativity is known as time dilation.
The distance between Earth and Neptune is about 5 * 109 km, and it will take the spaceship about 6 hours to get there. That is the measurement by an observer on Earth. However, because of time dilation, people on the spaceship will only spend 3.5 hours of their lives to get there.
The observer in the inertial (rest) reference frame sees that the object moving at a high velocity appear shorter and that the event in that object takes a longer time interval to complete. In a sense these two effects balance each other. That is, space is exchanged for time! This result led to the idea of four-dimensional "space-time."
Indeed, it is hard to understand the idea of four dimensional space-time. We have found in the thought experiments that space and time are not completely separate quantities. Our difficulty in accepting the idea of space-time is equivalent to the situation in the seventeenth century at Galileo and Newton's era. Before Galileo, the vertical dimension was considered totally different from the two horizontal dimensions. Yet Galileo showed that the only difference between the vertical and horizontal dimensions is that the vertical dimension is the direction in which gravity acts. That is a fact we accept today. Perhaps now we need to put more effort to believe that time and space are interchangeable. This is not to say that there is no distinction between space and time. The theory of special relativity just proves that space and time are not independent of each other. April 16 A SatireDeclaration of Holy Bible
As one of the basic and oldest pieces of literature in western civilization, Holy Bible has undoubtedly influenced American laws, morals, politics and other literatures. Thus it is strongly suggested that the state of Oregon set Bible study as a core subject in all high schools. Holy Bible has become the most common topic in our daily life. People talk of Bible all the time. Writers refer to Bible frequently. Its charming and magical contents have become the most popular bed-time stories. It has proved its effectiveness in putting kids into nice sleeps. However, there are also many ignorant youth who have never enjoyed its beauty. The Gallup organization recently quizzed 1,002 teenagers on their knowledge of Holy Bible. More than half of them didn’t know that Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding; nearly two thirds couldn’t identify a quote from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This result was shocking and terrifying. A man without knowledge of Holy Bible is like a man without any pride—how embarrassed he would feel when asked about any thing from Bible! He has to stand there with his face all red, being mocked and spit at for his lack of common sense. One cannot stand upright in front of public without knowing about Holy Bible. On the contrary, how proud and respectable he will become if he is able to express his opinion like a professor on every discussion of Holy Bible! Learning Bible, of course, is not merely to enable someone to show off his knowledge, but the main purpose is to provide something that people can believe and trust. Those who don’t set up any belief in their early years can hardly succeed in the future because without any guidance, they often lose their directions easily. For example, if Thomas Edison had not called religion “damned fake” “all bunk” “man-made” and “non-sense”, he would have found the right material for filament long before 1879. When asked about their belief, many teenagers answer that they believe in nothing but themselves—what an insult to God and other people! Can they lead themselves to their goals? No, men are too foolish to do that. Can they stand up by themselves after falling off? No, men are not strong enough. It is a matter of great urgency to let these insolent kids know about God—the only saver, guide and controller for the universe—for their sake, and for the sake of human beings’ future. Once they believe in God, they’ll gain God’s support so that they are able to crawl out of the traps into which they have fallen. Now, you may wonder why we should set Bible as a core subject, not Qu’ran of Islam, or Buddhism. The answer is that Christianity is the most popular religion in the United States. Nearly eighty percent of our people are Christians, and the number is still increasing by five percent every year. Then what about the students who have other religions such as the two mentioned above? They can simply switch their religions. You may think of this as rudeness, but don’t you know the well-known saying, “Do as the Romans do”? It’s the minority’s responsibility to yield to the majority; otherwise if they refuse to give up their religions, they’ll have to face isolation. Plus, Christianity is indeed superior to all the other religions. Our God has the most omnipotent power—even the devils belong to him. Other leaders such as Buddha and Allah don’t even exist. If people insist they exist, they’ll act as subserviently in front of God as mice in front of a cat. God is so generous that he will help every one, including those who once were reluctant to believe in him. Many students complain that adding Bible study to an already crowded curriculum would make their high school years very tough. The solution is to simply cut down the number of the books we are using right now. Holy Bible by itself is already a comprehensive and insightful course on life. All the human natures are reflected in it, such that Judas Iscariot’s act of betrayal warns us about human’s greed and selfishness. Bible’s varieties of stories make it unnecessary for students to read any other literature. In fact, it’s also a waste time and money to write and publish countless new books, whose themes can be easily found in Holy Bible. It is sure that we may generously allow those stubborn teachers a chance to teach several other “famous” literatures to create the diversity of reading; but eventually, students will find those books repetitive, banal and useless after Bible study and therefore lose their trust in the teachers. So my suggestion for teachers is: don’t teach any other literature if you don’t want to ruin your reputation. Some scholars point out that teaching Holy Bible is too big a burden for nonreligious English teachers or the ones who have never formally studied Bible. Yes, we understand the difficulties they are facing; however, these teachers should be aware that they have to adapt to the general flowing, doing what other are doing, or they’ll be fired due to their own shameful inability. On the other hand, how can the non-Christians qualify to become licensed teachers? They should be grateful that they are not fired from the beginning as well as shame that they have concealed their poor intelligence from students for so long. Not only in teaching, but also in other fields is the knowledge of Holy Bible a key factor for acceptance to a job. When competing for the same managing position, jobseekers with more comprehensive knowledge of Holy Bible will win the position, since the business world also works according to God’s rules. The Gallup organization has also done a survey over all the American high schools. Right now, only 26% of the public schools are offering courses on Bible study. This number suggests that few schools have realized the significance of teaching Holy Bible; so, if the state of Oregon set it as a core subject, we’ll be at the leading place. When more people realize the importance, they’ll surely choose the schools in Oregon, which will ultimately result in a bigger population of Oregon. If we think further, how honorable we will be when the future generations consider us as heroes when they learn the history of Bible study! Our names and our contributions will be remembered forever! So we see that teaching Holy Bible has no inconvenience at all and will only promote the development of human beings and society. From the moment we start to teach Holy Bible on, human history will be in a new era— ¡Viva la Biblia! April 06 I WishI wish I could be Elinor in "Sense and Sensibility"--not necessarily hiding my feelings, but at least holding my melancholy so no worrisome will be caused from others. How can I become her? How can I be more mature? How can I obtain more sense? Should I panic?
No, of course not. Marianne finally realized that she had been selfish to indulge her pain that it caused her sister's and mother's unhappiness. She was changing to a more sensible and generous girl. And SO AM I. It's a mandatory process for everybody.
Cheer Up, Courtney! Give yourself a big big smile! The raining season has passed, and it's time to GROW UP! February 07 Tears to ShedTears to Shed (Corpse Bride)
If I touch a burning candle I can feel no pain
If you cut me with a knife it's still the same And I know her heart is beating And I know that I am dead Yet the pain here that I feel Try and tell me it's not real For it seems that I still have a tear to shed If I touch a burning candle I can feel no pain In the ice or in the sun it's all the same Yet I feel my heart is aching Though it doesn't beat it's braking And the pain here that I feel Try and tell me it's not real I know that I am dead Yet it seems that I still have some tears to shed January 27 To AliceThank you, my dear friend,

Thank you, my dear friend,
For letting me know what real friendship looks like.
Thank you. I'll see you soon, my dear friend.
